Things to Do in Indian River
Wildlife Viewing
The Indian River area is a wildlife loverʼs paradise. Our forests, wetlands, and waterways are home to abundant wildlife, including a free-ranging elk herd. We invite you to explore, observe, and be inspired by the beauty of the wild.
Elk Viewing
Our area is home to the largest free-roaming elk herd east of the Mississippi. With hundreds of elk living in and around the Pigeon River Country State Forest, these stunning creatures are one of Northern Michigan's most iconic wildlife attractions.
While elk can be spotted year-round, the peak viewing season occurs during the fall rut, which typically runs from late August through early October. During this time, bull elk compete for mates and fill the forests with their distinctive bugling calls.
Bird Watching
The Indian River Area is a birdwatcher's paradise, offering an incredible variety of habitats that attract both resident and migratory species throughout the year.
The area is especially exciting during spring and fall migrations, when countless birds travel along major flyways and stop to rest and feed in Northern Michigan's rich natural habitats.
Birders may spot everything from warblers, thrushes, and waterfowl to raptors soaring overhead, while loons, herons, eagles, and osprey are common sights throughout the warmer months.
