Fishing

Nestled along the Inland Waterway, a 38-mile series of rivers and lakes, Indian River is an anglerʼs paradise. Our area boasts some of Northern Michigan’s most scenic and rewarding fishing opportunities. Come visit and cast a line in search of bass, walleye, pike, musky, perch, trout, and more.

Trout Fishing

With four Blue Ribbon trout streams, the Indian River Area's cold, fast-flowing waters are legendary among anglers. Brook trout and brown trout thrive in these pristine rivers. Hire a guide or grab a map and follow one of those “little blue lines.” You may discover your next favorite fishing spot.

The region also offers excellent opportunities to pursue lake trout. Found in the deep, cold waters of nearby Burt Lake, Mullett Lake, and Lake Huron, these fish provide a unique challenge and an exciting reward for anglers willing to venture offshore.

Ice Fishing

Mullett Lake, Burt Lake, and Black Lake, along with dozens of smaller inland lakes, are premier ice fishing destinations throughout the winter months. Anglers can target walleye, perch, northern pike, and even burbot. With numerous public access points throughout the region, getting on the ice is easy.

Black Lake Sturgeon Season

Black Lake is home to one of Michigan's most celebrated Lake Sturgeon populations, thanks in large part to decades of conservation and restoration efforts led by Sturgeon For Tomorrow and its partners. Each winter, visitors gather for the Black Lake Sturgeon Shivaree, a beloved community tradition that celebrates the opening of the stateʼs unique sturgeon season.

The event features live entertainment, family activities, contests, educational exhibits, and a chance to learn about one of Northern Michiganʼs most remarkable conservation success stories.

Veteranʼs Pier on the Indian River

Flanking the Indian River and stretching out into Burt Lake, Veteranʼs Pier is one of Indian Riverʼs most beloved waterfront landmarks. Dedicated to the men and women who have served our country, the pier is a popular destination for anglers, providing easy access to excellent fishing opportunities right from shore.

The Veteranʼs Pier is ADA accessible.
