Mackinaw Area Historical Society

Mackinaw City, MI (231) 997-0045

The Mackinaw Area Historical Society (MAHS) began with a simple idea: preserving and celebrating the history of the Straits area. On July 22, 1996, an informal gathering of Mackinaw City residents shared this vision, leading to the official formation of MAHS. By August 21, 1996, the “Articles of Incorporation” were filed, and shortly after, the organization received tax-exempt status, setting the stage for a legacy of historical preservation.

In the early 2000s, inspired conversations on a porch overlooking the Straits of Mackinac sparked a bold new dream—a Heritage Village where the rich history of the area could come alive. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of MAHS, the Village of Mackinaw City, and Emmet County, this dream became a reality in 2004. A 43-acre parcel, once owned by the McCormick Foundation, was transferred to the Village of Mackinaw City to create Heritage Village, symbolizing the enduring partnership between Mackinaw City and MAHS.

Today, Heritage Village stands as a testament to the determination and visionary spirit that have defined MAHS for over 25 years.
