David tells of several life lessons gleaned as he recounts Johan’s thrilling hero tale of survival during WWII, when he was captured by the Germans while on a secret courier mission with the Norwegian Resistance. Johan’s intense will to live and to retain his humanity enabled him to endure Nazi captivity for the remainder of the war in the worst of slave labor death camps: Natzweiler, Dachau, and Mauthausen. Michigan Global Awareness Consortium Lecture – Condition One: Extremes and the Human Spirit
Frida Waara, award-winning film maker, endured condition one weather conditions as part of the first all-female unsupported ski expedition to the North Pole and later while filming in Antarctica. As a filmmaker, she explores metaphorically how people encounter “condition one” in other settings, such as in large urban areas, where young people face another kind of dangerous landscape. Frida recently worked with and filmed inner city Detroit teenagers who daily encounter their own “condition one.” Join Frida as she shares her experiences and insights living and working on the edge. Frida has produced seven nationally broadcast films, including the Emmy Award-winning Midnight Mushers. 7:00 p.m. – Library 1-2
